The Birmingham Genealogical Society is offering for sale a CD of the 1870 census for Jefferson County. It is an every name copy of the census that was transcribed from the microfilm by the Birmingham Genealogical Society as a tribute to the nation’s Bicentennial in 1976. It went through at least eight proofreaders when it was originally published in book form, so it should be accurate. Dr Tom Caldwell, who was there when it was transcribed, told me that only one error was found in the book. In preparing this CD for the Society, we had every page scanned by Worth Barham so it has to be as accurate as the original. Worth did this on a pro bono basis, so we owe him and his company, Document Imaging, a collective thank you for his work.
If you would like a CD, send a check for $ 25.00 payable to the Birmingham Genealogical Society, P.O. Box 2432, Birmingham, AL 35201.
